Ward Summer Learning Institute

Rev. Gerald and Cheryle Washington, Directors

MISSION:
Each summer, Christ’s Church is host to the Ward Summer Learning Institute, a nationally recognized academic summer program for children who have been identified as needing extra help with reading, writing and math. Founded in 1993 by the Reverend Gerald Washington and Cheryle Washington, both teachers in the Port Chester School District, the program serves over 100 children.

The program is not just schoolwork, but a unique learning experience featuring certified elementary school teachers in small group classes. The children spend recess time at Rye Rec, eat breakfast and lunch in the parish hall, visit the Rye library and take at least one educational field trip during their four weeks at camp.

VOLUNTEER:
High school volunteers help the teachers in the classrooms, do individual reading or math tutoring, help at meals, accompany the kids to Rye Rec and generally help out as needed. Many of the volunteers return each summer to renew relationships with campers. In past summers, high school students have developed a baseball training program for interested campers. Volunteers also help with a walk-a-thon which raises funds for enrichment programs such as field trips.

Applications for 2017 volunteer positions are available now and can be accessed by clicking here.  The deadline for applications is March 31, 2017.
